What is the eWHO-5?

The WHO-5 questionnaire is a widely used self-reporting tool designed to assess subjective well-being and psychological distress. It was developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a brief measure of mental well-being. The questionnaire consists of five statements related to positive mood and overall well-being. The WHO-5 questionnaire is used in various healthcare and research settings as a quick and reliable measure of mental well-being. It can be helpful in screening for depression, anxiety, and overall psychological well-being. The questionnaire can also be used to monitor changes in mental well-being over time or evaluate the effectiveness of interventions aimed at improving mental health.

How to use the eWHO-5

The WHO-5 questionnaire consists of the following five statements.

Over the last two weeks:

  1. I have felt cheerful and in good spirits

  2. I have felt calm and relaxed

  3. I have felt active and vigorous

  4. I woke up feeling fresh and rested

  5. My daily life has been filled with things that interest me

For each statement, the respondents indicate their agreement on a scale ranging from 0 (At no time) to 5 (All the time). The scores for each item are summed up, resulting in a total score ranging from 0 to 25, which can be multiplied by 4 to obtain a percentage score from 0 to 100. Higher scores indicate greater well-being or higher quality of life, while lower scores may suggest lower levels of mental well-being or lower quality of life.

The importance of measuring mental well-being in dermatological diseases

Measuring the WHO-5 questionnaire in dermatological conditions holds significant importance for several key reasons. Firstly, it enables healthcare providers to assess the mental well-being of patients, as dermatological conditions can have a profound impact on psychological health. The questionnaire provides insights into the subjective well-being of individuals and helps gauge the psychological impact of the skin condition, such as distress, embarrassment, or reduced self-esteem. Secondly, the WHO-5 questionnaire serves as a valuable tool to monitor treatment outcomes over time. By regularly measuring mental well-being, healthcare providers can evaluate the effectiveness of dermatological treatments in improving overall psychological health and make necessary adjustments to the treatment plan.

Furthermore, the WHO-5 questionnaire aids in identifying psychological distress that may accompany dermatological conditions, such as depression or anxiety. It serves as a screening tool to assess the need for further evaluation or mental health support. By identifying individuals who may require additional interventions, healthcare providers can address both the physical and psychological aspects of the condition. Lastly, integrating the WHO-5 questionnaire into dermatological assessments enhances patient-centered care by recognizing the interplay between physical and mental health. This comprehensive approach ensures that the emotional and psychological needs of patients are considered, allowing for holistic care that promotes overall well-being.
